Astronaut Emily Calandrelli's Comments Go Viral, as She Gets Blasted for Her Hateful Words!
--
Mobinity.com - Staring out the rocket window at the shimmering blue of the Earth, Emily Calandrelli's mind is probably far removed from the trolls that inhabit the planet's internet.
But less than 24 hours after the MIT engineer and TV host known as "Space Gal" became the 100th woman to venture into space, a "horde of men" online made fun of her in a rude and emotional way, the author and astronaut said in a social media post.
In a video released by Jeff Bezos' aerospace company Blue Origin, an astonished Calandrelli, who was one of six space tourists on board the launch, can be seen looking out the window and exclaiming, "Oh my God, this is space."
It was an emotional and moving reaction to achieving what Calandrelli called a long-held dream.
Hundreds of social media users shared messages of support for Calandrelli, calling her an inspiration to women and young girls. Some women commented on her post saying that they had watched the live stream of the launch with their daughters.
However, trolls capitalized on her reaction, making so many offensive comments that Blue Origin removed the original video of the launch and replaced it with an edited video, Calandrelli said. CNN has reached out to Blue Origin for comment.
Calandrelli said that he wasn't going to let online trolls ruin an experience that gave him "the most life-changing spectacular joy and awe."
"I refuse to give a lot of time to the little people on the internet. I feel the experience in my soul," Calandrelli said in the post.
"I'm not going to apologize or feel weird about my reaction. It's completely mine and I love it."
A representative for Calandrelli said that he did not wish to comment further and preferred to focus on the inspiration his travels have given others, rather than the posts of "misguided" trolls.
