Official! Jack Teixeira Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for Leaking Pentagon Secrets

--

Mobinity.com - A federal judge on Tuesday sentenced a Massachusetts Air National Guard member to 15 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to leaking highly classified military documents about the war in Ukraine.

Jack Teixeira pleaded guilty earlier this year to six counts of willful retention and dissemination of national defense information under the Espionage Act after his arrest in the most high-profile national security case in recent years.

Brought to court wearing orange overalls, he showed no reaction as he was sentenced by US District Judge Indira Talwani. Before sentencing, he apologized for his actions.

"I want to say that I apologize for all the harm I caused," Teixeira said, referring to the "maelstrom" he inflicted on friends, family and anyone else affected abroad.

"I understand that all responsibility and consequences are on my shoulders and I accept whatever will happen," he said, standing up and addressing the judge.

Afterwards, Teixeira hugged one of his lawyers and looked at his family and smiled before being led out of court.

The security breach raised concerns about America's ability to protect its most closely guarded secrets and forced the Biden administration to scramble to contain the diplomatic and military fallout.

The leak embarrassed the Pentagon, which tightened controls to protect classified information and disciplined members who were found to have willfully failed to take necessary action regarding Teixeira's suspicious behavior.

Before sentencing, Assistant US Attorney Jared Dolan told Talwani that the 200-month sentence - or slightly more than 16.5 years - was appropriate for the "historic" damage caused by Teixeira's actions that aided enemies of the United States and hurt the country's allies.
