Vance, who represents Ohio in the US Senate, spread debunked claims about Haitian migrants living in the city of Springfield, Ohio, on Monday, accusing them of kidnapping pets and eating them.
The claims, which local police said were unfounded, were made by right-wing activists, local Republicans, and neo-Nazis before being covered by Vance. A well-known advocate for the Haitian community said he received a wave of racist abuse after Vance's post.
Vance made the claim as part of a political attack on Vice President Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate. On social media site X, Vance wrote,
"Reports are now showing that people's pets have been kidnapped and eaten by people who shouldn't be in this country. Where are our border authorities?" He was referring to the label Republicans have pinned on Harris, who was commissioned by President Biden to research the root causes of migration from Central America.
